Comic Con Salt Lake City 2013

I thought I would post a few photos from comic- con in Salt Lake City, Utah.
There are reports that the crowd was over 80,000 attendees !
Wow. It felt like it for sure. Crazy.

This was the first Comic Con in Salt Lake City.
Apparently they are signing a contract for 6 more years.

Best Celebrity award, would go to Henry Winkler. What a nice kind man, who is so appreciative of his fans. Super cool. Aye!

Hubbel's Past

As I have already mentioned, I have been working on Hubbel for over 10 years.
Here is an image of what he looked like in the early development stages.
I am also happy that Bill Hubble is a blue footed booby rather than a different bird type.

Hubbel Bio

What is this comic, titled, "Hubbel"?

"Hubbel" is about relationships in life and in the workplace. It's about climbing the ladder of success and feeling like the ladder is growing taller every day. This story speaks to those who seek for meaning in life...to those who try to solve lifes puzzling mysteries and can't seem to find the right answer. It speaks to those on a journey to find those simple things that make us happiest in life.
If only we wouldn't complicate everything we touch!

Meet Bill Hubbel.
He's an average fellow who wants to make something of his life. He has a voice and wants to be heard...but no one cares to listen. The world is too busy.

You see, Bill lives in a unique world. It is foreign, yet familiar to us all. His kingdom is a kingdom run by animals. Animal intelligence exists, you might ask? Of course it does. Bill Hubbel is part of that working society of lower creatures.

Or are they?

Together, they might seem eerily familar to the kingdom of man. Are they the ones that really run the world? Are they really animals? Or are humans the real animals?(lower creatures)
No matter how you interpret it...the animal and human worlds exist,

....but do they ever collide?

Welcome to Gondwanaland. Bill works for a game company called "Gork Games". He is a programmer. Too smart for his own good, and light years ahead of everyone else. The misfits in this game company must get along to produce their epic video games. They endure crunch time, wasted time, deadlines, and lots of Poo Chuckers. They all have their own tasks to do to complete each game...and they get a paycheck...so no one complains...
except, Bill Hubbel. He always seems to have something to say.

Bill is witty, intelligent, and completely full of himself. His motto is that he is "One of a Kind".
Its quite true, he is definitely one of a kind.
His intelligence is way beyond his years...and he excels in intellectual banter. Little does he know that his own intelligence will work against him in his life. He has a lot to learn...and has a lot of growing up to do. So, although his journey may be a rough road...it is a road we all can relate to.

So who is Bill? Why is he so truly unique.

I'll explain.

Bill Hubbel is part Loon and part Blue Footed Booby. His mother and father had a "moment" during the migration...and viola! Bill was hatched. His mother knew from the minute Bill hatched that her life would never be the same. Bill's father decided to stick with the loons during the migration, so his interaction with his Booby son was quite limited...

Anyhow, Bill was born and he would soon make his own mark in the world.
(Whether anyone would notice or not)

Welcome to Gondwanaland. Welcome to "Hubbel".

Hubbel Has Arrived!!!!!!!

Finally...after 10 loooooong years, I am FINALLY ready to start getting this comic into high gear!

First, a few updates...

- "Hubbel Employed" is now called "Hubbel"....

- I will continue finishing the 3d models....the renderings will just appear when I am ready to show them. Be patient.

- Let me know if you are a true blue Loony Booby at heart. It's always good to know there are more of us out there in LoonyLand.

- I am still trying to develop my style, so expect things to change along this journey. I am not perfect by any means!

- I will also fill in the back story along the way...it's tooooo much to give in one sitting...so you'll just get mini bites along the way. Plus, I don't want the story setup to slow me down at this point.

- I hope you enjoy a sneak peak into what I have been developing for 10 loooong years!!!! I'd love feedback.

- I don't think I can get a comic every day...but I will try to get to that point. My ultimate goal is 1 comic each week day. (5 per week) I'm not sure how long it will take me to get to that level....my 2d drawing skills have taken a backseat to 3d art for 17 years...so I am a little rusty.

- And finally, I broke down and bought a Wacom 24 HD Cintiq. That was the missing element missing from me getting these comics online. I have always been drawing and writing the Hubbel comic, but now you get to see them!!

Enjoy!

Archie

Archie Anaconda?
or Archie The Viper?

One is enormous....the other is just big.
One is venomous, the other brute strength.

hmmmm........

College Comics

I have decided to offer free comics to college newspapers once I get going.
I will offer details as I go.

cool.

P.S. Archie

I decided to change Vlad's name to Archie.
Just thought I'd officially make that announcement here....
to myself.

Hubbel Employed Characters

Recently, I was able to build 8 main characters in 3d as a character study.
Hubbel
Dilly
Hanna
Archie
Hermy
Pettles
Mr. Silver
Stryder Star

It was a blast to solve these characters, first on paper, then in 3d.
Here is a rough...and I mean "rough" sneek peak.

These characters are only spot colored. The still need UV's and textures. I plan to do that after I finesse the models. It's close, but I still have a ways to go.

enjoy!

Hello fellow Loonies

I have been working for a long time on my "Hubbel Employed" comic.

I have decided to post some in progress 3d screen shots of some of my work.
My goal is to start uploading comics on a daily basis. (5 days a week)
The format will start in 2d, and may eventually end up in 3d....or an occasional 3d rendering might show up to break things up. We'll have to see how it goes.
In the meantime, check out these untextured screen shots in Maya.

Game Plan...Latest Update

I am going to post a synopsis of "Hubbel Employed" so readers can understand a little bit about the story.

I have thought about starting the comic from the very beginning. It sounds like a really good plan, however, if I decided to go that route, I am confident that I will never start this comic.  It's much too hard to set it all up in its chronological order and events. Theres to much planning involved for my current schedule at the moment.

Soooo,

I will most likely start posting...Readers can fill in the blanks as I go along.

One day, maybe I will put everything in order.....but it will probably be when I'm old, bald, and use a walking cane.

Hubbel Medium

Ok...so one of my biggest hurdles while writing and developing Hubbel has been in deciding what medium to show these comics... I work all day in 3d as a character designer...so it would be logical for me (and quick) to make these characters in 3d....but....is 3d the best way to start?
There are so many ways to go...
- ink?
- color?
- pencil?
- quick sketch?
- 2D?
- 3D?
- Animation?
Crayons, Finger paint, Stick figures, Twigs, Chalk,
or...?

whoa Nelly.......

Even though this has been my battle for a looooooooong time,
I have decided to try the gammet and see what pans out.

So, please be patient with me.

Things may start, stop, change, rearrange etc...as I figure this out.

Hubbel will be a work in progress. And to those...if any...who are watching, you will get to see everything unfold before your eyes.

...in all its glory....or not.

Blue Feet

Don't you just love bright baby blue feet?

p.s. Hint #2

One of the most....

One of the most facinating creatures on this planet is the Blue-Footed Booby.

Yes, you heard me correctly. The Blue Footed Booby.

It is the most peculiar, strange, offbeat looking bird you will ever see.
They are found off the coast of Calif, in the Eastern Pacific Ocean to the Galapagos Island.
It is a marine bird.

It's called a Blue-Footed Booby because of it's bright blue feet.
(see pic)

These birds have a silly mating dance that you can view on youtube...

booby dance

it is really funny....and facinating.

Hubbel Thoughts

I have been working on, "Hubbel Employed" for a number of years. (since 2003)
Is is basically a story revolving around characters in an office setting. The story also explores their outside relationships, friendships and personal lives.

Over the years, I have seen similar "office" type comics, stories and television shows and have wondered if there is too much "office" type media out there. I have wondered about being labeled a copycat or trying to follow trends. My answer is simply this...

I have been inspired to write this comic regardless of what media is out there. I don't follow those shows or comics because I want to make sure that my ideas are fresh and new based solely upon my own life experience.

This comic is meant to be fun, entertaining and at times, very politically incorrect.

I make no apologies.

We live in a world that is carnal on steroids. We are a society driven by passions, appetites, and a drive to outdo, out perform, and over indulge. I have decided to add to this societal phenomenon by exposing "us" in comic book form, caricaturized by parallel characters. My hope is that one can hopefully relate to at least one of the characters.

Hubbel has been my passion for many years, and now I am at a point where I would like to start sharing it with friends, family, and whoever else is interested in knowing about a small insignifcant creation in my own little world, what I think, and where my heart is.

One might ask, "Which character are you?", "Which character is your alter ego?", or "Which character is most like you?". My response would be this.

ALL OF THEM.

I am sure that those who follow this blog will see the comic evolve over time, change in small or big ways and take on a life of its own. Maybe a blog isn't the best place to start, but I have to start somewhere.

I really do have something to say in this world. I have chosen to speak my mind through art, music and stories. I have no agenda. I have no propoganda. I just want to express what I feel and think and have chosen to do it through characters I have created in my own little Gondwana world.

I really hope that you will read and enjoy, "Hubbel Employed".

"On Hold"

I am short on time.

Summers are even worse for me. Yardwork (nearly an acre of grass), animals (yes, lots....chickens, pheasants, ducks, rabbits, horse, and a very large guard dog!) , summer vacations and activities.....too much for my brain to handle. Work at Disney keeps me busy enough.

ahhhhhh!

I have drawn hundreds of comics for Hubbel that I will eventually post. I just got my new computer this month and I am in the process of getting the software I need now. (Photoshop, Maya, etc) Maybe in a month or so, I can really get serious and get my groove ahn.

I have been drawing characters for Hubbel Employed for the past 3 months.
I have hundreds of cartoon strips that are ready to be drawn.
